a penchant for out-of-tune stuff

mar 24. reasons
was once asked for a reason for liking music so much. it's another je ne sais quoi thing. but i guess music takes no sides, and interpretation is up for grabs. so i guess that's it.
-------

feb 9. the end has a start
you know what. i am still riding on the highs from the "phew, thank god 2008 is over" effect; not that it was particularly bad, or that the year ahead would be like wowow, but i've got this 'back to basics' eureka lalala in my head and it's a good notion, albeit a strange one
-------

oct 1. the start
hopefully i'll update this stuff regularly though no one would read this;
we should spread good and sometimes obscure music around, but then again obscure loses its charm when it ain't obscure no more.

ok i was just talking sh*tt to fill up the space.

The Poetics of Sound
31.3.07
// 035 Nerina Pallot, Nidji & some Sandwich.

it's been a little bit of a music drought of late.
im re-digging Placebo's Meds. the album's still fab.
prolly the best of 06 since pretty much every track
is a hit inself.

this year, maybe shirley manson might make the list.
we'll just have to wait for her solo album.
shirley manson is awe. (swoooon)

ok back to now.

this one's a friend's recommend

"Sophia"
Nerina Pallot.

it's pissing me off cause she sounds so much like
someone in the song "Sophia" but i can't figure out who.
but anyhow, it's quite a nice tune.

// sophia - Nerina Pallot

"Heaven"
Nidji

and i finally found the song that they play in the HEROES ad.
- indonesian band nidji.

// nidji tracks on myspace
// lyrics to heaven

"butterfly carnival"
Sandwich

and since indo bands remind me of filipina bands,
i'm listening to Sandwich's butterfly carnival from
a couple of yrs back.
pity their sound seems kinda different now...

// butterfly carnival by Sandwich

i don't know what's up with indo and filipina bands,
they are awesome when they sing english stuff.
i think it's their rice or some shitt.

// 035 branding made easy

if i had a name like alison goldfrapp,
it would be shitt easy to come up with a brand name -
shirley manson sounds good too/ brian molko works...
ok you get the gist.

if, on the other hand, your name was tan seow kow.
think twice.

enough bullshit...i don't think i could listen to a whole
album of goldfrapp nonstop in one sitting..but this track is good.

goldfrapp - you never know

How long now
I love you
Steel painted eyes
Feels like snow
Change my head
Days so long

You never know
You never know
You never know
Just how long
It will be
Here we go again
We're going round and round
Here we go again
We're going round and round

Today I know
It's too long dare we'll see
Feels like snow
Chained myself to me
How long now
Longest story

lately i've been hearing about
going round in circles alot.
which is so damn true.
be it the rat race/ the history repeats itself shitt
and the groundhog day effect.

we need to be pulled out of these vicious cycles.

goldfrapp live @ brixton

// 034 faith yang 楊乃文 links

ok so i went into hibernation for a while
after attempting to read a massive amt of
chinese text. ok fine i am lousy at hyperlinking.

anyhow...

track 1 - "dame/ 女爵"
track 2 - "wo li kai wo zi ji/ 我離開我自己"
track 3 - "fen kai/ 分開"
track 5 - "jin tian qing chen/ 今天清晨
track 6 - "wei xiao zhe hui shou/ 微笑著揮手"
track 8 - "tv/ 電視機"

official site
almost all of the faith yang youtube links

pity that most of my favs in the album don't have mtvs.

14.3.07
// 033 still in awe...a decade later.

faith yang
"continuation"

this is going to be a very very very long entry...
cause this girl is brilliant, adament and goddamn honest.
(and extremely gorgeous.)

so i don't listen to mandarin music much.
i don't fully comprehend pop-ish-love ballads
and i don't like bubblegum music or ghetto/jaychou wannabes.
and the good alt people i kinda liked have sold their souls
to the devil that is commercialism.
but i don't want another verbal bashing from 'the dad'
about commercialism being the way to earn truckloads
of moolah. so i'll stop at that.

but anyhow, you have your meds and i have mine,
i'm just a little left wing in terms of taste.

so thank faith yang for faith yang.
for picking quality and integrity over
fast cash and bubblegum.
5 years for the new album is well worth it.
(and another 3 months for my lag in getting wind
of the new album)

but anyways...these are my initial thoughts.

track 1- 'dame'
this one's quite a dismal song though i can't express
the extent of thoughts evoked into text.
i could interpret this in a million ways...
somehow i see it as the other woman who likes the guy;
but will always be the other woman?
or the resilient concubine fighting for the pompous king

doesn't really say that in the song;
must have been watching too much of oprah winfrey.
...
track 8- 'tv!'
don't know why people sing about tvs but it works
tanya chua's colour tv set was pretty darn good
and this track is as contagious as the art of
couch potato-ing in front of the telley.
an instant head-bobbing anthem.

track 9- 沙尘暴 (hmm..explosive sand dunes? jk)
i think this is true alternative at its best.
i'm predicting the future with this one.
it's going to be my favourite track.
it's one of those songs where the vocal somewhat goes
against the grain of the melody yet fits somehow...

track 10- 'continuation'
this one really resonates well with the listener.
you can visualise the scenarios as she sings it.
my favourite song for now.
u've gotta love her to death. nuff said?

track 11- 'be in love'
i've heard trip hop elements in alternative music
but this is a first. alt artist crossing over to the trip hop genre.
definately a surprise which makes me a very happy trippy fan.
think goldfrapp vs sinead o conner.
faith yang has clearly evolved.
from a cover of depeche mode's somebody to
english alt in the form of 'surrender' to english trip hop.

i'm impressed and would gladly wait 5 years for the next masterpiece.
u get a new revelation everytime you listen to her albums.
which makes them impossible to get sick of.

*links soon.

6.3.07
// 032 almost worthy of a tragedy

so i'm not a very happy camper right now.
word is that marilyn lee has left the house.
well the radio station that is.
i think i'm 6 days late on the news but
i thought she was on holiday or some 'b-side' project.

so there's goes my radio staple.
i really liked the non-slapstick,
calming persona that she projected.
(of course the voice helps too)

hopefully i'm wrong abt the leaving or
i hope to find her on air again soon
even if its a chinese channel.

--
so i had to go to the long untouched cd rack to
get some music.
it's got some goodstuff but its
sucha chore to find stuff from racks and shelves
rather than messy piles on the floor and table.

organised chaos works i tell you.

and then there's usually one or two good songs in one cd.
what a bummer...

3.3.07
// 031 before the fumes fizzle...

i'd better state my case.

leslie hunt was robbed!
how many people actually listen to
fantastic vocalists who can perform
complex vocal gymnastics and have voices
sometimes so loud they give everyone a headache.

having said that, doolittle is still cool in my books.
well i guess leslie was better in the audition and she is a little off-center.
but the girl brings a different sound to the table for once.
i guess they think that eccentric goofy people don't fit
the mould of a celebrity... pfffft to that.

i'd pick raspy offbeat raw talent anytime.

// snipet of audition etc
// more of the addition
// listen to 'you don't know' on myspace
// I on myspace

Please put sanjaya out of his misery. and then cut his hair.
and cut a couple of barberella antonellas out please.

2.3.07
// 030 cupid got me in a chokehold ..& then some...

so i'm a lousy blogger.
so many momentus occasions to write about
that i missed.
like 'the list' of songs the dramaqueen should
not listen to during valentines day.
*hint jennifer hudson would make this list
alongside james blunt.

don't get the hype about this day and i don't get why the bus was filled with
kids with heart shaped balloons.
well somehow balloons are not that appealing
when u get old and paranoid;
those helium foil ones that are cat shaped and
have legs that touch the ground are an exception.

ah shit this is supposed to be about music.

so yeah...the grammy winners were bizarre as usual,
mary j blige was kinda robbed. at least rhcp won some stuff.
and nelly furtado still is uber *** even though i wasn't there to
witness an apparent fashion disaster on her part.
(*** = fabulous and then some... or insert ur own 'drool' word here)

ahem.

one more piece of old news.
marilyn lee extended hours.
10am til 4pm wkdays 6am tile 12pm saturday.
wkrz 91.3fm

definately a good reason to ditch the tv.

----
so i don't know why old is the new new.
but i'm not complaining.

gym class heroes

We even got a secret handshake
And she loves the music that my band makes
I know I'm young but if I had to choose her or the sun
I'd be one nocturnal son of a gun

i'm strangely amused. and the video's strangely cute.
